■Lake Akan and Marimo (moss ball)
Marimo is rounded moss ball which is a nationally protected species in Japan. Lake Akan is a bed of Marimo with 600 million including various sizes. Lake Akan is also an area for Hokkaido squirrel, Northern fox, Hokkaido deer, Blakiston's fish owl, Whooper swans and many other wild animals.
■Lake Kussharo and sand bath
Lake Kussharo is Japan's biggest crater lake (lake created by volcanic activity). The volcanic activity is still active and when you dig the sand near the shoreline, heated water is exposed. A sulfur mine is nearby.
■The first observation point of Lake Mashu
It is the clearest lake in Japan. Lake Mashu is often covered by mist and it is called the Misty Lake Mashu. Also, when the sky is clear, the surface of the lake appears blue, so it is also called Mashu Blue. Both are mysterious sights to see.
■Iouzan (a sulfur mine)
You can smell sulfur and hear the steam bubbling up. It is a popular tourist spot that is dangerous to approach and you can feel the force of the Earth. It is convenient to use the tourist bus, White Pirika, to get there.
■Japanese Crane National Park
It is the popular area where you can see nationally protected Japanese cranes in any season or weather. 10 minutes drive from Kushiro airport, from Kushiro station, you can catch the bus, Akan line and it is recommended to use the tourist bus, Shitsugen 55 PASS.
■Kushiro Marshland National Park
Kushiro Marshland is designated as a protected area for the national treasures and it is the breeding grounds for many animals including Japanese cranes in Kushiro. It is also a wildlife sanctuary registered under the Ramsar Convention. You can enjoy the wild nature by viewing from observation points on the hills, walking on boardwalk or even from canoeing.
■Odaitou
I want to go to Odaitou! Odaitou in Bekkaichou is a little known popular spot along to the Sea of Okhotsk. It is recommended to use Kushiro Hyousetsu line if you want to enjoy the view of the Utase sail ships which are fishing precious hokkai shimaebi, Hokkaido's special prawns, in the ocean or go to Notsuke peninsula.
